Appellate Practice Section of The Florida Bar

Chair’s Message, September 2025

Dear Appellate Practice Section Members, Thank you to the many of you who completed our recent membership survey. Section leadership has already reviewed and discussed your thoughtful feedback, and we are hard at work implementing your great ideas—including creative ways to offer more free CLE content (your top response). One exciting development: because so many of you asked for more social and networking opportunities, we’re planning informal, in-person gatherings statewide to coincide with our upcoming virtual committee and Executive Council meetings this Fall.
📅 Save the Date:
 • Committee Meetings – Wednesday, October 22 Our CLE, Communications, Outreach, Pro Bono, Publications, and Programs Committees will meet at staggered times, so members can attend any and all meetings of interest.

• Meet-Ups – Wednesday, October 22, 5 to 7 p.m. Join Section officers and leaders at locations across the state for informal networking and connection.

• Executive Council Meeting – Thursday, October 23, 11 a.m. (via Zoom)
All Section members are invited and encouraged to attend to hear about the Section’s ongoing work and discover ways to get involved.

Stay tuned for meeting locations, virtual links, and more details on how to join in.

And don’t miss these upcoming Fall CLE opportunities, each one a chance to learn and connect:
• The Rules Process & How Recent FRCP Changes Affect Appellate Practice, September 16, 2025, 12:10 p.m. to 1:10 p.m., as part of the Monthly Webinar Series
 • Write Like a Supreme Court Justice, October 16, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., University of Miami School of Law
 • The Art of Objecting, October 7 (Part I) & November 4 (Part II), held virtually (full program description and registration link coming soon)
 • An Interview with Florida Supreme Court Clerk John Tomasino & Clerk’s Office Staff Attorney Julia Breeding, October 21, 12:10 p.m. to 1:10 p.m., as part of the Monthly Webinar Series

We are also forming a new Ad Hoc Retreat Planning Committee. This Committee will select the destination for our 2026 retreat—Boston, Nashville, or New Orleans, as identified by your survey responses—and plan the program and events. If you’d like to help shape this important tradition, please contact Chair-Elect Elaine Walter at elaine@kulalegal.com.

In the nearer term, the Section is delighted to sponsor and invites you to attend an upcoming event hosted by the Florida Supreme Court Historical Society:
• A Celebration of Justice Arthur England, Florida’s First Jewish Justice
• Featuring an esteemed panel of Justice England’s friends and colleagues, moderated by Chief Justice Carlos Muñiz
• Meet and Greet with the Florida Supreme Court Justices
• September 18, 4 p.m., Miami-Dade College, Wolfson Campus, Chapman Conference Center

Finally, we highlight the ongoing, impactful work of our Pro Bono Committee, led by Jamie Moses and Bailey Howard. In recent weeks, the Committee has fulfilled a request from the Florida Supreme Court and circulated opportunities for an Eleventh Circuit appeal, an administrative appeal, and several DCA appeals. This is connection in action—a testament to the vital role our Section plays in supporting the profession and the public.

If you are not currently receiving pro bono opportunities, reach out to Jamie (jmoses@mmpodefense.com) and Bailey (bhoward@clarkpartington.com) to be added to the listserv.

Thank you for staying connected. We look forward to seeing many of you—virtually and in person—in the months ahead.
